It originally opened in 1959 as the 180-room Flamingo Capri motel, located adjacent to the Flamingo hotel and casino. In 1977, the hotel had 650 rooms, after the completion of its Imperial Palace Tower. The resort was later reopened as the Asian-themed Imperial Palace in 1979.
A daunting task of giving the resort a new, “digital”, ultramodern face while keeping the building bones was a major challenge for KJW and HD teams. The main feature of the new design is a digital canopy, or the Vortex, that accents the fluid forms and flowing patterns of the Las Vegas Strip facades. The Vortex is a beacon that marks the casino entrance and acts as the gateway of the pedestrian promenade.
