Hetzel Design received a commission to design an addition to the Monaco Oceanographic Museum in 2016. The original building is a historic monument and the site is very limited. It was decided to build over the water. Hetzel designed a minimalist structure to house the addition that virtually doubles the museum area. In addition to the new galleries, Hetzel proposed incorporation of a flying theater, a high tech 4D media chamber that combines a dome screen with 3D projection and seat movement for complete immersion sensation. The roof addition provides desperately needed open public space, a public plaza with amazing ocean view. The terraced seating and multiple levels can be programmed for organized outdoor activities, lectures and performances.
The only intervention to the original building was the addition of a rooftop restaurant with minimal visual impact to the exterior.
The old and new are connected through a glazed atrium that doubles as a vertical gallery. The entire circulation pattern was revised, to enable smooth, choreographed guest flow.
